BENIN.
A Non Government Organization (NGO), known as Angels Wings African Health Empowerment Foundation, is set to eliminate preventable ailments and premature death all over Africa.
Speaking in an interview with FLAGNEWS NIGERIA, at a medical outreach in Benin, capital of Edo state, the American-based nurse and founder of the Angels Wings African Health Empowerment Foundation, Mrs. Angela Oriakhi, gave insight into how it all started and the structures of the NGO.
In her words, " It all started about a year ago with just me and my immediate family members. We are registered in Nigeria and set to be registered in the United States of America where I base. One of my board members is Rwandan so its all over the African continent. I have a cameronian also.
Every time we see on TV and the social media, young Nigerians dropping dead, as a result of blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and other preventable ailments. So we decided to find out the basic causes and we discovered that majority of them are working around without knowing their health status while others could not afford the cost of medication. Some of them their blood pressure could be so high and they will just drop dead. So that's what motivated me. A woman had twins and the doctors refused to attend to her for not being able to pay the medical bills. A father had her 8 year old daughter died for not being able to pay hospital bills. Am a nurse by profession and it breaks my heart to see people suffer and die. But today is my happiest day because I see people praying for me. I want it to go round every community and set up urgent care unit or a small clinic where people can just walk in and have treatment for free. Over 300 widows were seen and treated today, and over 200 men and children Were treated of hypensivesness, high blood pressure, among other ailments. The services are ongoing as we have employed nurses to continue with the services Every two weeks (Saturdays). We need more locations and I have spoken with my people all over the country to this effect.
Although, the government is doing its best, but we need the government to treat the citizens well, otherwise a whole generation will be wiped out. When you have a blood pressure your kidney will be shut down. People are surprised that this treatment is free. So the government can do same because we have oil and Nigeria is a rich country".
The NGO founder further used the opportunity to call on the government of various countries and states, the Organised private sector and other well meaning Individuals and groups all over the world, to support the NGO, in order to ensure continuity of free medical mission and make the processes to be less cumbersome.
The occasion also featured the donations of Stethoscopes to the student nurses of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and financial assistance to some patients in the wards.
In an interview with FLAGNEWS NIGERIA, the beneficiaries appreciated the Angels Wings African Health Empowerment Foundation while praying that God should bless the founder and the supporters.
