ASUU COMMENCES INDEFINITE STRIKE OVER NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF EXISTING AGREEMENT•

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike, commencing from 12th August, 2017.

According to a bulletin issued by the ASUU national strike coordinating committee and signed by ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, “the union has commenced an indefinite strike following alleged failure of the federal government to faithfully implement the 2009 agreements and 2013 Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the union”.

The resolution to go on strike was sealed after the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU met at the University of Abuja on Sunday 12th August, 2017, to consider the results of a referendum from all branches in a bid to ascertain ways of convincing Government to implement outstanding agreements.

The result of the referendum had shown that an overwhelming majority of the different branches of the Union showed an overwhelming support in favour of a strike.

A source from ASUU said: “It seems the federal government is more concerned with buying exotic vehicles for the National Assembly while public education and lecturers continue to suffer owing to dilapidated infrastructures.” This is a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action.
