The honourable member representing the Ika North East constituency in the Delta state House of Assembly Tony Elekeokwuri has disclosed reasons why political office holders give out cash as empowerment.
Speaking in a public forum today, the lawmaker said, "It is pertinent to note that our people need reorientation of mindset. That there is 'dignity of labour and hard work does not kill principles in life'.
Elekeokwuri further stated that," We have Skill Acquisition and Vocational training centers all over the State. We encourage our people to avail themselves of these opportunities to better their tomorrow. Often times the immediate is usually the concern of Youth population. This is the reason for our Public Political office holders giving out cash as palliative. I agree with you that it is not the best of options available".
Concerning the women, the legislator remarked that, " our rural women need this cash as start up capital for their small trade businesses . These women from my research have done so much magic in turning around this so called cash".
Citing the constitution, Elekeokwuri stated, "Section 14 sub section 2b of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, state that the security and welfare of our people is the PRIMARY purpose of government. The Legislature is an arm of government whose primary responsibility is to make laws for good governance that ensures that the Executive performs their functions (implementation of projects and programmes) effectively and creditably.
Consequent upon the aforesaid, the Legislature is not a contract awarding or approving authority. We usually use our power of influence to attract projects while being mindful of our responsibility as watchdogs. Having a SMART governor as mentor and 'Great Constituent' is a different ball game. But We shall continue to do our best to improve on standards in education and Skill Acqusition programmes.
We might not be where we wished to be but we are no longer where we use to be" He said.
It is worthy of note that in this sixth Assembly of the Delta state, Hon. Tony Elekeokwuri is the first lawmaker to sponsor a private member bill that was passed into law.
