By Andy Adaigbe (FLAGNEWS).
The chairman, Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency (DSPHCDA), Dr. Isioma Okobah, says the agency would embark on a free medical outreach from Wednesday 13th December to Tuesday 19th December, as part of activities marking the 2017 Second Round of Maternal Newborn Child Health Week (MNCHW).
The American-based medical expert who spoke with FLAGNEWS NIGERIA via broadband, disclosed that the programme would provide free services for mothers and children, ranging from free Ante Natal care for pregnant women, free nature vitamins, free HIV screening, deworming, immunisation, Vitamin A supplements, nutritional assessment for those with malnutrition, birth registration, distribution of insecticide treated nets, among others.
According to Okobah, " We want to help promote family planning services, because we know that a healthy mother will ensure a healthy baby and healthy children will make a healthy nation. We are also focusing on the newborn and under 5, in collaboration with the UNICEF and the office of the Wife of the Delta state governor"

Dr. Okobah also remarked that the purpose of the event was actually to improve mother and child health, decrease maternal mortality rate and create awareness, especially for those living in the rural communities, regarding the principles of healthy living and promoting good hygiene.
She said, "We will also use this opportunity to distribute mosquito nets for the children and mothers because we know a lot of people suffer from malaria. So basically, we are focusing on improving the health outcome of both mothers and children because a lot of children die even before their first birthday and that's because of these preventable diseases. Now we are flagging off in Asaba, we normally do it every six months maybe the next time, we shall go to Warri area and we have started training the community health Care workers, and the state government has embarked on renovation of the primary health care centers across the state. The health care centers will also undergo a facelift because the state government has already started renovation of about 100 health care centers across the state. We have also embarked on capacity building by training and retraining our health care workers to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate. During this period, all primary health care centers across the state, will offer free antenatal and maternal services from 7am till 4pm".
